School Kits

School Kits often provide the only supplies for children returning to school after the disruption of war or other disasters, help parents continue their children's education, even while living in refugee camps. The kits show students that someone far away cares, while helping to teach our children and grandchildren how to give. Collection and packaging occurs from August through September, for a final blessing in October and boxcar loading for shipping abroad by Lutheran World Relief.

Items needed include:

  • Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper; no loose-leaf paper
  • One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
  • One pencil sharpener
  • One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
  • Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band
  • Five ballpoint pens with blue or black ink (no gel ink); secure together with a rubber band
  • One box of 16 or 24 crayons
  • One eraser approximately 2 1/2” long
  • One sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag approximately 14”x17” with shoulder straps (no standard backpacks)
