School Kits

School Kits often provide the only supplies for children returning to school after the disruption of war or other disasters, help parents continue their children's education, even while living in refugee camps. The kits show students that someone far away cares, while helping to teach our children and grandchildren how to give. They are a joint effort of 25-30 family groups, who provide the school supplies and craft the kit bags that hold them. Collection and packaging occurs from August through September, for a final blessing in October and boxcar loading for shipping abroad by Lutheran World Relief.

Items needed include:

  • padded or spiral notebooks containing 150-200 sheets of 8 1/2" x 11" paper, either in one large notebook or 2-3 smaller notebooks. (no loose-leaf paper, please)
  • one scissors with metal blades (safety scissors preferred)
  • one ruler (30 centimeters or with centimeters on one side and inches on the other)
  • one pencil sharpener
  • six new, unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers
  • one eraser, approximately 2 1/2" long
  • 12 sheets of construction paper
  • one box 16 or 24 crayons

For each kit, please gather the 8 items listed, bring them to worship in a grocery sack, and place them in the green container near the Welcome Center. If you are interested in sewing some of the school kit bags, you can pick up fabric and instructions from the green container.
